Forage, Wildlife, Cover Crop Peas
(When we consider the Forage and Wildlife market needs, we have clear breeding objectives:
Useful Vocabulary and Information:
We want to bring varieties with key benefits to the industry. We also want to simultaneously explore management systems that maximize those benefits for those who plant and feed our varieties. We believe that the value of each variety will earn your support as a customer.
Icicle (Winter Forage, Bio Cover Crop, & Wildlife Pea) is a unique and versatile winter pea with characteristics that make it particularly attractive for markets as a high biomass yielding winter pea. Icicle has white flowers that allow for better palatability and digestibility with good, or better, durability as any other winter pea.
Max (Spring Forage, Bio Cover Crop, & Wildlife Pea) is very similar to Flex in yield and maturity, as well as diversity in markets it can serve. It has advantages in both Powdery Mildew Resistance, as well as tougher seeds, leading to a higher germination rate.
Compass (Spring Forage, Bio Cover Crop, & Wildlife Pea) Compass is the quickest to establish ground cover with the best seedling vigor when compared to other forage/BioCrop™ and wildlife peas. Compass is excellent as a forage pea when planted alone and good when planted with forage oats or triticale.
Journey (Spring Forage Pea & Wildlife Pea) has exceptionally strong early seedling vigor as its key attribute. This gives Journey a quick start. It has been used as a fall seeded forage and cover crop pea in California with good success. It is also used extensively as a spring seeded forage pea by itself and in blends with spring oats and other spring small grain forages. Variety profile (in development).
Upcoming Varieties
Pro 6101 (Winter Forage, Bio Cover Crop, & Wildlife Pea) is an extremely aggressive winter forage pea, with high forage yields and will make an excellent winter cover crop. Its quick growth will also make it a great component for a blend.
Pro 7110 (Winter Forage Pea) is a semi leafless winter forage pea variety, giving this variety superior stand-ability compared to most other forage pea varieties, while maintain a high forage yield. Variety profile (in development).
- Strong & early seedling vigor
- Smaller seed size and higher seed yields to save on seed cost
- Improved tonnage produced at the right time for the use
- Higher nutrition, better digestibility and better palatability
- Durability
Useful Vocabulary and Information:
- Stand-up/Semi leafless: The pea plants ability to stand better due to tendrils in place of leaves that the variety is bred to have. Useful for the plants ability to stand in harsh weather conditions such as snow.
- Cotyledon: The nutrients in the seed embryo that are consumed during germination.
- Seed Coat: The natural protective outer layer that encompasses the seed embryo.
- White Flowered: The lack of Anthocyanin (a group of antioxidants found in red, purple, and blue fruits and vegetables) in the white varieties makes the plant as well as the pea more palatable for people and animals.
