Trical forage triticales are the standard of the industry in the US. Syngenta Seed maintains an extensive breeding, variety testing and nutrition testing program to identify the optimum product for the forage producer and the livestock feeder. Below are the varieties that are key in the Pacific Northwest. Trical Triticale Managment Profiles are available on the Profiles, Articles & Data page.
Trical Winter Forage Triticale Varieties
Most winter triticale in the Pacific Northwest are planted to harvest at boot stage and double crop. The exceptions are in dryland settings and at higher elevations where flowering and milk stage are often the harvest stage for hay.Trical 815 (Profile) is a variety that has higher protein for high nutrition forage quality for lactating cows. This variety, along with Trical 336, is also the earliest to boot stage in the spring. Strong winter hardiness. Used on irrigated ground.
Trical 102 (Profile) is the most durable variety in the group. It is used for fall, winter and spring grazing, boot stage silage and milk stage hay. There are other varieties that are earlier to grazing stage in the fall or quicker to harvest stage in the spring or higher quality. But the is no other variety that is as versatile or as widely adapted as Trical 102. Strong winter hardiness. Irrigated and dryland.
Trical 336 (Profile) has earlier maturity for double cropping in South Central Idaho. Strong winter hardiness. Trical 336 is used on irrigated ground.
Trical 103BB (Profile) is quicker to grazing stage in the fall and reaches boot stage in the spring between the early Trical 815 and 336 and the later Trical 102. Trical 103BB is a consistent performer that is mid range on winter hardiness. This variety is used in irrigated and dryland settings.
Trical 348 has found a good home in the Central Oregon region through Round Butte Seed. It has good winter hardiness and is quite versatile.
Trical 718 (Profile) is a new variety that we originally struggled to find a niche for. Through more extensive testing it has found a place similar to Trical 102 but with one step up for fall and spring grazing, 3 days earlier maturity to late boot and better lodging resistance. Trical 718 has these advantages but still commands the strong winter hardiness and broad adaptability and durability demonstrated by Trical 102.
Trical 765 has faster growth with better leaf density of all the winter triticales when supplied with sufficient fertility and water.
Trical Spring Forage Triticale Varieties
Trical 2700 (Profile) has been a mainstay for the program for over ten years. It has strong seedling vigor, exceptional boot stage tonnage and good lodging resistance. This variety will be available for about one more year before Trical 141 replaces it in the Pacific Northwest.Trical Merlin (Profile) is the first and still the only completely awnless spring variety available anywhere. Merlin is deceptively good with the tonnage it is able to produce on irrigated ground.
Trical 141 is a new variety that has simply jumped out at us in the trials every year it has been tested. It has been at or near the top in trials from Washington to New York. It looks a lot like Trical 2700 but without the beards and even has surpassed 2700 for yield at all stages. Trical 141 will be available for the first time in limited supply the spring of 2011. This one is worth checking out.
