Spring Dry Field Pea Program

ProGene Plant Research and Plant Research (NZ) Ltd of Christchurch, New Zealand have teamed up with Crites Seed of Moscow, ID to bring the dry pea industry of the United States the top quality focused breeding effort. As small breeding companies working together, our strength is in the niche of high quality green peas. These varieties are presented in a managed variety program. This program is designed to bring added value varieties to the market and manage them to protect that added value so that everyone can share in those benefits. That includes the grower, the breeder, the seed supplier, the processor and the end user. ProGene conducts breeding and adaptability research in all the states that grow dry peas along the Northern tier.

Green Peas

Aragorn (Profiles:PNW|Midwest) is the newest of the three premier quality smooth round green peas from the ProGene program with very good agronomics. It is three days earlier maturity than Ariel, Cruiser or Columbian and displays excellent standing ability in the Pacific Northwest and Central Montana and good standing ability in North Dakota. Aragorn is the only variety grown in all regions across the US. It has strong yield results in the PNW and Central Montana with good bleach resistance. Aragorn is an excellent splitting pea and is an asked for variety in the edible market.

Ariel (Profile: PNW) has the best bleach resistance of any variety on the market in North America today. Yield and height are good with a smaller seed size. This allows for lower seeding rates and lower seed cost. Ariel is an excellent splitting pea and is an asked for variety in the edible market.

Banner (Profile: PMW) is our newest green pea with superior agronomics. Banner is a high quality smooth green pea with a dimple similar to Columbian. Banner is a semi-leafless stand up pea with optimum height and stronger yield capability than Columbia. Banner has the best seedling vigor and quickest establishment of any semi-leafless green pea on the market in North America. Banner also is one of the best stress tolerant varieties with very good bleach resistance. The market strength for Banner comes in the canning and whole pea market and is an asked for variety in the market.

Cruiser (Profile: Midwest) is one of the original high quality smooth round green varieties. It established the bar for quality edibles from a semi-leafless stand up green pea. Cruiser continues to be used in Eastern Montana and North Dakota, but has been replaced by Aragorn in the Pacific Northwest. Cruiser is an asked for variety in the market.

Monarch (Profile: PNW) is the earliest maturing semi-leafless green pea in North America. Maturity and yield are its trademark. Monarch is adequate in quality and bleach resistance. It is used only in the Pacific Northwest.

Pacifica (Profile: PNW) is another Pacific Northwest pea variety that has found a small but very strong niche. It has the largest seed size of any of the quality green peas and is a smooth round green with a dimple in the Columbian type market. Good height, high pod set and good standability make it an excellent pea to harvest.

Yellow Peas

Carousel (Profile: PNW) is ProGene’s entry in the yellow pea market. With mid maturity, strong standability, high pod set and very excellent yields it has great agronomics for the Pacific Northwest.
