Winter Peas

Current Varieties from the ProGene Plant Research genetics program:
|
|
| |
Nutrigreen: This winter pea has been around in the winter forage class for about 6 years and is just now developing into a market player
in the Pacific Northwest as a forage and nurse crop pea and in the South East United States for wildlife mixes.

| |
Whistler: Winter feed pea. Whistler winter pea acreage has increased from 300 acres planted in the fall of 2004 to about 1200 acres seeded
the fall of 2006. The area of greatest adaptation has come in the Waterville area of Cental Washington planted on summer fallow and chem fallow ground. Yields there have ranged from
1850 to 3400 lbs per acre. Whistler also brings to this area advantages of a legume in the rotation for the first time. Other areas of interest are the Dayton/Walla Walla area as well
as traditional winter pea production areas and nontraditional locations. Markets in the feed, bird and limited food seed markets have been developed and the feed will be handled
through a marketing pool similar to the TriMark grain triticale marketing pool.

Winter peas are not as genetically advanced in the dry edible green and yellow market classes as are the spring peas. ProGene Plant Research recently
dedicated a renewed effort in breeding for these winter market classes when Mike Wood joined our research staff in the spring of 2004 with responsibility for the winter pea breeding
program. Mike came to us from Syngenta Seed where he was an accomplished dry bean breeder. Mike has identified some winter varieties with edible quality green seed and we are
optimistic about future releases.
