- ProGene and our breeding partner Plant Research (NZ) Ltd. are collaborating with USDA-ARS in Pullman, WA and Plant & Food Research in Christchurch, New Zealand to identify pea nutrition characteristics and their corresponding genes.
Aragorn has excellent quality with darker cotyledon green color than Columbian. Aragorn has very good uniformity of seed size and slightly larger seed size than Columbian. Aragorn is very similar to Cruiser in appearance with round smooth seed, but with better bleach resistance and larger seed size than Cruiser. Lower hard seed incidence than Columbian and close to as good bleach resistance as Columbian. Aragorn is High Quality, provides excellent quality split green, and asked for quality in India.
Ariel has very similar whole pea appearance as Aragorn and Cruiser, smooth round with darker green cotyledon color with uniform seed size, but with smaller seed size than either of the other two. Ariel has lower hard seed incidence than Columbian and better bleach resistance than Columbian. Ariel has the best bleach resistance of any green variety. Ariel is High Quality, provides excellent quality split green, and asked for quality in India.
Pacifica is a smooth dimpled pea resembling Columbian in whole pea appearance. It is larger seeded than the other green peas grown in the PNW with good uniformity of size. Whole peas of Pacifica are not as dark green as Banner but are close to the color of Columbian. Pacifica has lower hard seed incidence than Columbian. Pacifica's Good Quality has found a home in some niche markets.
Monarch has larger seed size but is more uniform than Columbian in size. Monarch is lighter green color and more bleach susceptible than Columbian. Less hard seed than Columbian. Monarch has Medium Quality.
Cruiser is a smooth round green pea with good uniformity of size. Cruiser is not as bleach resistant as Aragorn and is smaller seed size. Cruiser is a a good quality split pea and asked for quality in India. Good to High Quality.
K-2 is a smooth round edible pea with lighter green cotyledon color and lighter green whole pea color than Aragorn or Cruiser. K-2 has good quality but not as good as Aragorn or Cruiser. Good Quality general pea.
